When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that parents schedule their child’s first orthodontic visit by age 7. It’s around this time that their little smiles have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and because their jaws are still developing, it’s important to monitor how adult teeth come in.
Without growth monitoring, crowding and other potential problems may make orthodontic treatment more challenging later in life.
What is Orthodontic Growth Monitoring?
As your little one grows, your Prairie View Orthodontics care team can help watch for orthodontic issues before they become more serious, making the work of orthodontics in their later years a lot easier. For example, we’ll monitor:
- Potential cross-bite and open bite development
- Obstructive breathing issues—is your child a mouth breather?
- Position of baby and permanent teeth
- Dental overcrowding or spacing which could hinder or affect permanent tooth development or position
- How permanent teeth come in
- Teeth at risk for injury or decay due to protrusion or overcrowding
- Harmful habits that may cause orthodontic problems (thumb sucking)
- Oral hygiene and overall dental health
- A balanced facial appearance

I had the best experience at this office. I had my braces for about 2 years and 4 months and the whole time I was in treatment I never had any issues with scheduling or getting help. Dr John is great and staff is incredibly friendly! I was always treated so kindly!! 10/10 recommend to anyone looking to get braces for themselves or for their children!
Dr. John is the absolute BEST! He is so very kind to not only his patients but, his staff. I have never met a doctor so caring. My daughter got her braces off today and her smile is perfect. What a great experience! We went to the Geneva location and even before our appt, we had the best service! Beth texted me early to prior to our appointment to confirm some details which no one ever does (ie insurance stuff, braces vs. Invisalign, etc). Super helpful feeling prepared. In the appt. hey went over everything and more and made our kids feel comfortable and maybe even excited about getting Invisalign. The doctor was super nice and helpful! Beth was also the best and super nice!
We’ve had a great experience with Prairie View Orthdontics. Dr. Zimmer and her staff have done an amazing job with my son’s teeth. From an expander to braces every step and appointment was completed professionally and with my son’s best interest in mind. They are friendly, caring, and transparent. We’ve already recommended them to several friends.
My 10 year old tends to get nervous depending the type of appointment. They were great with explaining what would happen next, why and what everything they used was for and did. I’m impressed with the technology that they’re using. It’s pretty impressive. The financial part was broken down for me to see. The whole appointment was positive. The popsicles on the way out for the patients is great little touch! Awesome experience overall!
