Metal braces

Metal braces are a classic for a reason. They are a reliable, affordable way to straighten teeth, and they’ve only gotten better over time. You can even add a little personality by choosing your favorite colors for the elastic bands. One of the best parts? We can often start your treatment the very same day you come in to see us.

Damon metal braces

Many of our neighbors choose Damon braces as an alternative to the traditional style. These use special "self-ligating" technology, which is just a fancy way of saying “they tighten themselves,” so they don't need elastic ties. They are designed to be a bit gentler and are often more comfortable as they shift your teeth. Another big plus: Treatment time is sometimes shorter.

Ceramic braces

If you’re looking for something a bit more discreet, ceramic braces might be your favorite. These ceramic brackets are tooth-colored or clear, so they blend in naturally. They are a popular choice for adults and teens who want the power of braces without the "metal" look. Sometimes called “invisible braces,” they are a more inconspicuous version of the Damon system designed to help you stay confident during your journey.

Dr. John is the absolute BEST! He is so very kind to not only his patients but, his staff. I have never met a doctor so caring. My daughter got her braces off today and her smile is perfect. The office was always so accommodating and everyone that works for Dr. John is super nice. I will continue to recommend him and the office to anyone looking to better their smile.

I had the best experience at this office. I had my braces for about 2 years and 4 months and the whole time I was in treatment I never had any issues with scheduling or getting help. Dr John is great and staff is incredibly friendly! I was always treated so kindly!! 10/10 recommend to anyone looking to get braces for themselves or for their children!

We’ve had a great experience with Prairie View Orthdontics. Dr. Zimmer and her staff have done an amazing job with my son’s teeth. From an expander to braces every step and appointment was completed professionally and with my son’s best interest in mind. They are friendly, caring, and transparent. We’ve already recommended them to several friends.

What a great experience! We went to the Geneva location and even before our appt, we had the best service! Beth texted me early to prior to our appointment to confirm some details which no one ever does (ie insurance stuff, braces vs. Invisalign, etc). Super helpful feeling prepared. In the appt. hey went over everything and more and made our kids feel comfortable and maybe even excited about getting Invisalign. The doctor was super nice and helpful! Beth was also the best and super nice!

This is our third child going through treatment at Prairieview. We can’t say enough good things about them. I shopped around at probably 10 different orthodontics for my oldest when she needed braces and not only was prairieview one of the most reasonably priced, they were the most welcoming. They are very flexible and always willing to help. Courtney is wonderful. She’s always so friendly and willing to help. Dr Zimmer is very knowledgeable and explains stuff throughly. You won’t be disappointed picking Priarieview!

What foods should I avoid?

To keep your wires and brackets safe, it’s best to skip a few things for a while. We suggest avoiding:

  • Chewy snacks like jerky or bagels
  • Crunchy foods like popcorn, chips, or raw carrots
  • Sticky treats like caramel or licorice
  • Very hard foods like pizza crusts or hard candy
  • You can still enjoy things like apples and corn — just make sure to slice the apples or cut the corn off the cob first.

Bottom line: If you’re thinking, “it might not be a good idea to eat this,” trust that because you’re probably right.

How do I brush my teeth with braces?

It takes a little extra care at first, but you’ll be a pro in no time.

  1. Give your mouth a quick rinse with water first to loosen any food.
  2. Brush at a 45-degree angle starting at the gum line.
  3. Make sure to brush from both the top and bottom of your brackets to reach under the wires.
  4. Follow up with careful flossing. We’ll show you the best technique during your appointment to make sure everything stays nice and clean.
Are braces painful?

Generally, braces aren't painful, but you might feel a little sore right after you first get them. This is totally normal and usually doesn't last long. A simple saltwater rinse (one teaspoon of salt in warm water) can really help. If you need it, an over-the-counter pain reliever or a little bit of wax on a pokey bracket can make things much more comfortable.

What are TADs and will I need them?

In the past, fixing complex bite issues sometimes required headgear. Thankfully, we now have Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs). These are tiny anchors that give us a steady point to move teeth more precisely. Not everyone needs them, and we’ll talk about whether they’re right for you during your first visit.

How long will I have to wear braces?

Most of our friends finish their treatment in 12 to 24 months. Since every smile is unique, we’ll give you a good estimate when we start. Once we see how your teeth are moving after a few months, we’ll be able to give you an even closer timeline.

Can I get braces that aren't as noticeable?

Yes. Our ceramic braces are a wonderful, more discreet option. They use the same gentle forces as metal braces but with clear brackets that are much harder to see.

How much do braces cost?

The cost depends on your specific goals and the type of braces you choose. We want to make sure care is accessible, so we offer flexible payment plans and will work with your insurance to make the most of your benefits.

How Do I Know Which Braces to Choose?

We would love to help you decide. Every smile is different, and together, we can look at your goals and find the fit that makes you feel best.
