What are the Different Types of Retainers?
Clear Retainers
For most of our friends, clear retainers are a great choice at the end of their treatment. They are thin, transparent trays that look a lot like Invisalign® aligners — and they’re made by the same company. They’re a favorite for adults because they’re virtually invisible and very comfortable. Just a quick tip: try to give your retainer a little brush every time you take it out or put it back in to keep it fresh.
Removable Hawley Retainers
This is the "classic" retainer. If you’re picturing a molded acrylic piece with metal wires, that’s the Hawley, named after Charlie Hawley, its inventor. It’s been around a long time because it works so well. It’s custom-made to match the roof or floor of your mouth and is very durable. Just like the clear ones, you’ll want to keep these clean with regular brushing.
Bonded Retainers
Sometimes we suggest a bonded retainer, which is a single wire tucked away on the backside of your teeth. These are great because they stay in all the time, so you never have to worry about losing them. They are especially helpful for keeping those front teeth from shifting.
Because they only hold the front four to six teeth, we’ll usually have you wear a clear retainer over them too. You’ll just need a floss threader to keep things clean underneath. If it ever feels like it’s coming loose, just give us a call and we’ll get it fixed up for you.
